Meaning and History

Arizona Wildcats Logo History

In 1972, the original university logo was updated and received a combination of textual and graphical parts in the form of curved “UA” letters. They are presented as smoothly transitioning into each other with a common side. The elegant figure intentionally resembles cat tails, as the mascot of the athletes is the fictional cat pair, Wilbur and Wilma. Before this time, the team symbol was the real cat Rufus Arizona, named after the first head of the university Rufus B. von KleinSmid.

In 1990, a completely different emblem appeared – strict in style and precise in geometry. The letter “A” with serifs was taken as the basis. The central part is red, the middle is white, and the outer is dark blue. The thickness of the stripes is the same everywhere, so the official palette is distributed evenly. Moreover, due to the triad, it seems that the logo depicts not one but three letters.
