Meaning and History
The old emblem of the Eastern Kentucky Colonels, used from 1966 to 2004, was not diverse. It was the inscription “EKU” – an abbreviation of the full name of the educational institution. The dark abbreviation is surrounded by a double circle. There are no letter spaces: the symbols are closely placed next to each other, with “K” and “U” merging at the top.
Since 2004, the logo has included a graphical element. Artists depicted the head of a man with gray hair, a beard, a mustache, and lowered eyebrows. According to the authors’ intention, this is the very colonel who is the mascot of the sports teams. He is wearing a wide-brimmed hat and a bow tie. To the right is the inscription “Eastern Kentucky Colonels,” divided into two lines.
