The Eastern Washington Eagles is the sports division of Eastern Washington University. The program covers seven sports: volleyball, track and field, tennis, soccer, golf, cross-country, and basketball. Currently, the institution has twelve teams, has been participating in the Big Sky conference since 1987, and has been competing in NCAA Division I (FCS) since 1983. Before that, they were listed in NAIA, and in the late 1970s, they didn’t make it to Division II.
The Eagles is not a constant name for the department. Previously, it was known as Savages, but after 92 years of use, the old nickname was deemed inappropriate. In 1973, the student council held a vote, and the majority supported the current option.
Meaning and History
The current logo, adopted in 2000, combines graphic and textual elements. The central image is an eagle, which is the official mascot of the university and reflects the names of the sports teams. It is depicted using separate geometric shapes. The head, torso, legs, and feathers are black. The middle of the wings and tail are red.
This is specifically done to draw attention to the elements in the shape of the letters “E,” “W,” and “U.” This technique allowed the designers to encrypt the name Eastern Washington University in the drawing. The overall style is minimalist despite the deep symbolism. The bird is depicted on a white background and is not surrounded by anything. It is simply flapping its wings and, judging by the posture, is about to grab prey.

The women’s basketball team appeared in 1982. It only once won the Mountain West Athletic Conference tournament, after which it participated in the NCAA competitions (1987). The men’s team was a bit more active: basketball players participated in two NCAA tournaments, as well as in one NIT, five NAIA, and three CBI. Currently, their coach is Shantay Legans.
Eastern Washington Eagles Football
Eastern Washington University introduced its football program in 1901. Athletes competed in NAIA, then moved to FCS, where they won the national championship under Beau Baldwin. They also won 26 conference championships, 10 of them in the Big Sky conference. Currently, the players are coached by Aaron Best. Home games are played at the unique Roos Field with red turf.
