The Fairfield University sports program emerged in the 1940s. The university began sponsoring a cross-country running team and chose the nickname Men In Red for them. In 1948, men’s baseball joined the supported sports, allowing the adoption of a mascot. Of the two proposed options, “Stags” received the majority vote, partly because the educational institution was part of the Hartford Diocese, and the word “Hart” means a male red deer.

Currently, Fairfield Stags represents twenty university teams, participating in NCAA Division I and competing in the MAAC. The most renowned are the women’s and men’s golf programs. According to Golf Digest, they are among the best in the country.

Meaning and History

Fairfield Stags Logo History

The emblem used from 1991 to 2001 consisted of a white stag’s head in the foreground and a large red letter “U” in the background. Above was the word “Fairfield,” written in a small sans-serif font. The bottom part was occupied by the inscription “Stags.” It stood out thanks to its creative style and black outlines.

In 2001, a new logo was introduced. Its structure largely coincides with the previous version – only the background letter “U” is missing. The stag’s head is turned to the right. Following it are long, thin lines, creating an effect of motion and dynamism. The black antlers are directed forward as if in attack. Below is the inscription “Fairfield University.” The first word is in a serif font, and the second is in italic grotesque.
