On November 6, 2005, MLS Commissioner Don Garber permitted Anschutz Entertainment Group to move the Texas franchise. However, he insisted on retaining the name, colors, logo, and history of the previous team in the new hometown. The owners had to compromise. Thus, the franchise, including the coaches, staff, and San Jose Earthquakes players, moved to Houston.
Before the 2006 season, Anschutz Entertainment Group conducted an online “Name the Team Sweepstakes” survey for fans to suggest names. The obvious winner was “Houston 1836”, receiving more votes than “Mustangs,” “Spaniards,” “Generals,” “Eagles,” “Buffaloes,” and “Apollos.” According to AEG, the name “1836” referred to the year Houston was founded (similar to German TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and Hannover 96).
However, it turned out the chosen name had a dual meaning, as 1836 was also the year Texas gained independence from Mexico. In the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution, the Texan army was led by General Sam Houston. Thus, Houston’s 1836 logo featured his silhouette. Latino fans found this decision offensive.
To avoid political protests and not lose the Spanish-speaking fan base, the owners announced the team’s rebranding. The new name “Houston Dynamo” was introduced on March 7, 2006. It was a nod to Houston’s soccer history: originally, “Houston Dynamos” competed in the United Soccer League in 1984 and 1985.
